Here’s a classic and comforting Shepherd’s Pie recipe made with savory meat and creamy mashed potatoes:

Traditional Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients

For the meat filling:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground lamb (or use beef for Cottage Pie)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup carrots, diced
  • 1/2 cup peas (frozen or fresh)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Boil the potatoes: In a large pot, cover potatoes with water and boil until tender (about 15–20 minutes). Drain, then mash with butter, milk, and salt. Set aside.

  2. Cook the meat filling:

    • Heat oil in a large skillet.
    • Sauté onions and carrots for 5 minutes.
    • Add garlic and cook 1 more minute.
    • Add ground lamb, breaking it up, and cook until browned.
    • Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
    • Add broth and peas. Simmer 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  3. Assemble the pie:

    • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Spread the meat filling evenly in a baking dish.
    • Top with mashed potatoes. Spread evenly and rough up the surface with a fork (this helps it brown).
    • Sprinkle with cheese if using.
  4. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden and filling is bubbling.

  5. Let it rest 5–10 minutes before serving.
