Classic Vanilla Butter Cake

  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking dish or two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with flour. Mix until just combined.

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, combine buttermilk, butter, sugar, and baking soda.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it begins to boil. It will foam — keep stirring gently.
  3. Simmer for 5–7 minutes, until slightly thickened and golden.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
  5. Pour the warm sauce over slices of the cake just before serving.
