Ingredients
1 lb (450g) beef (flank steak or sirloin), thinly sliced
1 large onion, sliced
2 tbsp oil (vegetable or peanut oil)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1-inch piece ginger, minced
2 green onions, chopped (optional, for garnish)
1/2 tsp sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
For the Marinade:
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp Shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)
1 tsp cornstarch
1/2 tsp baking soda (optional, for tenderness)
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp sesame oil
For the Sauce:
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tsp dark soy sauce (for color, optional)
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp white pepper
2 tbsp water
Instructions
1. Marinate the beef – Mix the sliced beef with the marinade ingredients. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes (or up to 1 hour for more flavor).
2. Prepare the sauce – In a small bowl, mix all the sauce ingredients and set aside.
3. Stir-fry the beef – Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok or pan over high heat. Stir-fry the beef in batches for 1-2 minutes until just browned. Remove and set aside.
4. Cook the aromatics & onions – Add another tbsp of oil to the pan. Stir-fry the garlic and ginger for 10 seconds, then add the sliced onions. Cook until slightly soft (about 2-3 minutes).
5. Combine everything – Return the beef to the pan, pour in the sauce, and stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes until everything is well-coated.
6. Garnish & serve – Sprinkle with green onions and sesame seeds if using. Serve hot with steamed rice.
